Item Description
11x17". c. 1964. Thin cardboard poster advertising an event at Ingram Memorial Congregational Church in Washington D.C. that featured "Mrs. Jacob Karzo Of The Friends Of Danville" who told of her time spent in a Danville prison after being arrested during civil rights demonstrations in the southern Virginia city. On June 10, 1963 a group of 50 marchers gathered for a prayer vigil. They were met by state and local police as well as deputized city garbage workers who used night sticks and fire hoses to break up the vigil. Of the group 47 were injured and needed medical attention. The day became known as Bloody Monday. The demonstrations continued and by the end of the summer more than 600 locals, SNCC, and SCLC members had been arrested. A .25" loss at lower right corner and a .5" horizontal edge tear along left edge. Moderate toning and handling wear. VG. Rare. Ted Watts Collection.
