Item Description

Originally created in 1923 as an advertisement for a local real estate development, the now iconic "Hollywood" sign was a frequent target of pranks and vandalism over the ensuing decades as well as bearing the effects of exposure over time, the sign was quire dilapidated by the 1970s. During the '70s an effort to restore the sign was started. This effort included Alice Cooper, who rallied the record industry to help restore the sign. At that time, the last "O" in the sign was nearly completely destroyed, so Cooper decided to "donate" an "O" from his last name to repair the sign in the memory of Groucho Marx, a close friend of Cooper's. In addition, Cooper vowed to call himself "Alice Coper" during his 1978 tour. The sign has since undergone restoration. Lot includes original glossy 8x10" publicity photo of Cooper standing in front of a large photo of the decrepit sign, pointing to a small "O" placed in the appropriate spot. Cooper wears a shirt w/his name on it, missing the last "O" in his name. Photo comes w/press release explaining Cooper's commitment to the sign. Press release has horizontal fold at bottom w/piece of tape at bottom center. Photo shows some handling wear and is Fine/VF. Comes w/4x5-1/8x1-1/8" thick Lucite presentation piece containing "A Piece Of The Original Sign - 1923-1978" w/Cooper's etched facsimile signature. The worn "O" piece has "Hollywood" Walk of Fame star placed over it. Exc. And interesting lot.
