Item Description
First is 1.5" tall silvered brass fob with letter "G" encircling horse head. Reverse text "Gray's Tonic Preventive-" 'Make's 'Em Eat'/The E.E. Gray Co. Hinsdale, Ill." Metal was once brighter silver, now with some tarnish and slight brass show through but no other damage. First we've seen. Next is 1.5" real photo button of horse with inscription above his back "Joe Patchen/2:01 ¼." At bottom of photo in very tiny text is "Copyright 1897 By Noath Losey/Okla. City, Okla." Known as "The Iron Horse" Joe Patchen was foaled in 1889 and raced against the top pacers most of his career. He was a champion pacer of the half-mile tracks and the time on this button refers to a famous race at Terre Haute, Indiana. He was the most popular pacer of his day although now he is mostly known as the sire of the great champion Dan Patch. Button has no maker name. Reverse is an open back with fixed horizontal bar pin. Some minor oxidation on the metal back but otherwise NM displaying Mint. Rare.
