Item Description
The 1942 Rose Bowl game was scheduled to be played in the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. It was moved to Durham, NC due to fears of an attack by Japanese on the West Coast following the December, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. The government prohibited large public gatherings on the West Coast for the duration of the war and the first significant cancelled event was this Rose Bowl game scheduled for New Year's Day, 1942. This button names "Duke" and we are aware of a matching button that exists for their opponent Oregon State. This button has pair of fabric ribbons joined to a 2.25" long figural litho tin football with small text "Made In Japan." Slight wear on the fabric ribbons but no serious splits. The button and football are both NM displaying Mint. We have seen auction results for this piece in excess of $700. See next related variety. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
