Item Description
12x20.5" on thin paper. Text accuses the "Baker Cligue" of "Bribery And Corruption" and includes the passage "Bringing The Power And Patronage Of A Slave-Supporting Administration Into Direct Conflict With The Rights And Interests Of The Working Men!" Text also accuses Baker of using "Names Of Democrats And Free Soilers On A So Called People's Ticket" noting that "No Respectable Democrat Or Free Soiler Will Consent To Serve On The Board With Him". Signed in type at conclusion by its author "A Workingman" and dated at lower left "Lynn, April 16, 1852." One vertical and three horizontal folds w/weakness at junctions and small areas of loss at edges. Top left corner has a 2.5" loss at corner. Otherwise only moderate age toning scattered throughout. VG. Daniel C. Baker was in the shoe and leather trade and had close ties to Boston that surely helped prompt the text of this rare broadside. Despite its powerful content addressing such topics as slavery, labor relations and political corruption Baker was elected the third Mayor of Lynn, MA. We could not locate any other examples of this broadside and it is the first we can recall encountering in our 50 years.
