Item Description
7.75x13.25" coarse weave cotton flag w/hand inscribed "Roosevelt" on the fourth stripe and "Chicago March 27, 1912" on the sixth. When Roosevelt arrived in Chicago March 27, 1912 he was still in a bitter battle for the Republican nomination and reeling from defeats in early primary states thus facing an uphill battle for the nomination. His arrival in Chicago was marked by a parade from Union Station to the Congress Hotel and along the route this flag was used to greet the former President. New Mexico and Arizona were admitted to the union on Jan. 6 and Feb. 14, 1912 respectively making this an early example of a 48 star American flag. Light overall toning but generally in extremely Fine condition and retaining part of the original stick. Ex-Peter Scanlan Collection.
