Item Description
22x30" w/"New York City" union bug at lower left. Art by "Gropper" a major contributor to left-wing publications of the era including The Masses. Graphic features a determined marcher in working class garb leading a group of marchers around his feet towards three politicians hiding behind the US Capitol. Text reads "On To Washington Demand Unemployment Insurance And Immediate Winter Relief" w/additional text "Dec. 7, 1931 National Hunger March." Produced to announce a "Mass Welcome And Send Off To The Hunger Marchers" w/blank area to fill in the location of the event. Food riots had broken out across the country as early as Feb. 1931 as continuing economic hardships created desperate conditions for the masses of unemployed workers. The demonstration was the first national hunger march and was organized by the Unemployed Council and the Workers International Relief, both Communist organizations, to coincide w/the opening of Congress. One vertical and three horizontal folds likely as issued. A less than 2" vertical tear left of center along bottom edge that barely reaches the "W" in "Workers" and a 1" vertical separation at the top center fold. Technically VF but displaying Exc. First we've seen in our 50 years.
