Item Description
9x11x3.75" deep window box w/stamped label area reading - "Gorilla." 1960s. Box lid is missing cellophane window and has some corner tip wear. Box is o/w Fine. Contained within is adult size small (32-34) rayon costume w/silk-screened gorilla design and sparkle accents, including to "Gargantua" name on chest. "Gargantua" references captive lowland gorilla famous in his lifetime (1929-1949) and credited w/saving Ringling Bros. from bankruptcy. An acid scar on his face gave him a fierce expression, and circus management attracted attention by emphasizing his alleged hatred of humans. Costume has partial tag and even aging. VF/Exc. overall w/no splits/tears. Thin, vacuform plastic mask is NM w/no cracks/dents and comes w/original elastic string (not attached), though metal ends have some lt. oxidation. Scarce.
