Item Description
2.25x2.75x.75" deep box w/lid that reads "Popeye Watch" includes Popeye creator "Segar" name  along lower edge. Side panel of box reads "Watch Division The New Haven Clock Co. Copyright King Features Syndicate, Inc., 1935" along w/patent numbers. Lid has just a trace of age tone, tiny 1/16" dot of black color gone at center and the right side panel has a vertical hairline split at corners w/tape repair. Box is complete w/die-cut cardboard insert reading "Popeye Watch Nickel Finish." Insert has tiny bit of wear around the die-cut opening and 1/8" split at the upper left, but remains clean. Box bottom is intact and clean. Fine overall. The watch itself is in a pentagonal case w/rounded corners. Dial has nice image of Popeye walking w/his arms for watch hands. Dial bkg. also includes tiny portraits of Wimpy, Olive Oyl, Ham Gravy and others. Second wheel w/full figure of Wimpy chasing a flying hamburger. Replaced crystal. The bezel, loop above the winding stem and outer edge of the case back have all lost most of the nickel plating but these areas are a very  clean brass finish that blends well w/the remaining plating. Condition of the dial is superb and essentially Mint. Watch is running. We offered this very same boxed watch in our Sept. 2005 auction and are now re-offering it here. Still the only example we've offered in our 50 years, complete w/rarely seen original box.
