Item Description
14-1/8x22-1/8" thick cardboard w/large "Sign And Pictorial Painters And Decorators NC Local 391" union bugs at bottom center. Included are: "Turn Toward Peace"; "For Peace With Freedom" and "Mr. Kennedy, We Support Your Words. Give Us A Chance To Support Your Actions." All have staple holes at intervals along center and near corners; minor edge dents and corner wear; light punctures and surface paper lifts. Most notably the sign addressing Kennedy has a .25x.5" hole at center that does not affect text. Good/VG. JFK, in the middle of a whirlwind campaign tour for the Indiana Democratic primary, was to speak at Earlham College on April 29, 1960. Kennedy did show up but his voice didn't; exhausted from a flurry of campaign events, JFK had lost his voice forcing an aide to deliver his remarks and read his written on the spot responses to questions from the crowd gathered at Goddard auditorium in Richmond, IN . His speech focused on disarmament stating in part "There Can Be No Disarmament In The World Until We Know The Communists Will Co-operate And Agree To An International System Of Control And Inspection." Our consignor's father attended the rally as a student and has preserved these placards for the last 57 years. These are almost assuredly the only examples extant and provide a fascinating window into the developing 1960 presidential campaign.
