Item Description
26.5x39" .This beautiful stone litho was produced by "Louis Roesch Co." in San Francisco, CA w/their 1904 copyright at bottom left and a San Francisco union bug at bottom right. A graceful Lady Liberty holds an olive branch in her right hand above offset oval portraits of the Republican candidates w/an American flag draped over her left arm encompassing an eagle, wings spread, perched behind an American shield at bottom left. At top right is an illustration of the Washington Monument at sunrise. The impeccable design is completed w/ornately framed text at bottom reading "For President Theodore Roosevelt/For Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks/1904." Among many striking things about this poster, the portraits are truly piercing w/Fairbanks expressing a demeanor as serious as his office should command and Roosevelt's blue eyes looking out from behind his classic Pince-nez glasses possessing the depth of an ocean. Professionally linen mounted by a skilled conservator who performed minor restoration to repair a pair of 2" sections along top and bottom that were trimmed to fit into a frame. This work is contained almost entirely to the margins, only barely affecting the top of the olive leaves and the bottom of the "1904" frame. The vast majority of this piece remains untouched and displays Exc. It is not uncommon for posters of this era to have some amount of restoration given their size, the thin paper stock they are printed on and the often-turbulent existence most experienced. We are aware of less than five surviving examples of this design in collector's hands w/this the first we can recall being offered at public auction. This poster has it all; imposing size, beautiful color, superlative quality and extreme rarity. The successful bidder, no matter how advanced, will add a center piece to their collection and once framed this beauty is sure to bring even the most advanced collectors to a standstill.
