Item Description
Pair of 19.25x26.75" paper posters for the 1905 live dramatization of "The Clansman" by Thomas Dixon, Jr., which was published the same year as "The Clansman: A Historical Romance Of The Ku Klux Klan," a book that was influential in providing the ideology that helped support the revival of the Ku Klux Klan. The book was later adapted as D.W. Griffith's groundbreaking 1915 silent film "The Birth Of A Nation." Posters were printed by The J. Ottman Litho. Co. and note the play was based on "The Clansman" as well as Dixon's other novel "The Leopard's Spots." Posters feature illustrations from scenes in the play and are labeled "The Mulatto And His 'White Dream'" and "The Lovers Farewell." Posters also note that play was under the "Direction Of The Southern Amusement Company - George H. Brennan Manager." First poster has aged strips of tape added to margins on back, w/entire bottom edge having split along tape w/archival tape repair. A number of horizontal creases crossing poster w/three archival tape repairs to horizontal crease at center and aged strip of tape at top. Margins have also darkened. Good/VG overall. Second poster is mounted to board and coated in shellac. Obvious corner tip wear at top w/pieces missing. Some rippling to poster as mounted. Scattered margin wear w/a few small pinholes/holes. Good/VG. Appearance of both posters would improve if framed.
