Item Description
This captivating piece  consists of bowl-like wooden container, with curved sides, about 1.5" deep and 3" in diameter. The interior walls are painted white, there is patterned green paper lining the bottom and a slightly recessed, fixed in place, glass cover. The center interior base holds a vertical post about an 1/8" thick into the top of which is inserted a vertical pin with a head. The pin supports five die-cut paper pieces representing Grant's head, two arms/hands and two legs/feet. These five pieces all come together beneath a die-cut center piece representing the trunk of his body. The five pieces are cleverly attached to the body so that with the slightest movement of the container each piece jiggles about both up and down as well as left and right. The trunk of the body should rest on the top of the pinhead. On this example, somehow, the pinhead came through the body. The figure still moves as it should and will not fall off the top of the pin because the pin head keeps it on the shaft and it will not drop down any further because of the width of the shaft below the figure. Advertised in the Ives, Blakeslee & Co. catalog as "Magic Toys" in five styles of Grant, a bird, a ballerina, a black man and Ben Butler, see next item.  Rare and Fine.
