Item Description
We had an example of this ring with missing red paint and missing silver luster in Auction #222 which realized $8,710 including the buyer's premium. Much to our surprise, that result pulled this 98% Mint example from the grass roots. It belonged to our consignor's father who must have set it aside upon receipt in 1940 and never wore it. The red accent paint on the top of this ring was the first to be worn away. On this example the red background around the words "Supermen Of America Action Comics" is 100% intact. On his "S" emblem there is a microscopic dot to the right of the letter "S" without red paint but this is very likely as made. The only other loss of original finish is a 1/32"x1/16" long speck of silver luster off the narrow edge of the front right band about .25" below the top. This leaves the silver luster 99% intact. We know of over 20 examples of the "Member" ring used for a 1940 Action Comics sponsored contest open only to members of the "Supermen Of America Club" who had to write a letter on the subject "What I Would Do If I Had The Powers Of Superman". That ring has the full text "Supermen Of America Member". We know of only eight examples of this ring inscribed  "Supermen Of America Action Comics" and it's quite possible that this is the most Mint example still in existence. There are two additional differences between this "Action Comics" ring and the "Member" ring. On this ring the left and right side panels do not show a planet and lightening bolts as on the "Member" ring, but rather a pair of V shaped geometric designs. In addition, the "Member" ring does not identify the maker. The "Action Comics" ring does identify the maker with stamped inscription on the lower inner band "Made In USA" along with the trade mark of the ring maker Uncas which is the letter U with an arrow design crossing it. We think this is the crucial clue to the purpose of this ring because the words "Made In U.S.A." were required on items, include premiums, that were going to be distributed in Canada. An outstanding example, 98% Mint, and likely the best condition obtainable.
