Item Description
Referred to as a comfort bag, this 7.5x12" drawstring bag was to be filled and used as a gift packet prepared by civilians to be sent to Imperial Japanese soldiers for the purpose of encouraging them. The bag would contain items not issued by the Japanese military, such as toiletries, dried fruits, canned foods and letters of encouragement. These bags were prepared by schoolgirls or local patriotic women's societies. They were also made in Korea (then under Japanese rule) to encourage Korean soldiers in the Imperial Japanese military. Front of bag features anti-Allies silk-screened caricatures of Roosevelt and Churchill, who wears bloodied bandage about his head as shell careens toward's FDR's head. Two small adhered Japanese text labels are applied to exterior and are likely manufacturer's label and tax stamp. Folded into quarters w/dust soiling/aging and 1.75x4" dark stain by FDR image. Fine overall. Mark Treitel Collection.
