Item Description
17.5x23". Published by Bromley & Co. and titled "Political Caricature No. 1/The Grave of the Union/Or Major Jack Downing's Dream, Drawn By Zeke." Greeley and Sumner lower the coffin of the "Constitution" as Beecher (clutching an African American Infant), Lincoln, Chase and Welles look on. At their right are coffins labelled "Union," "Free Speech & Free Press" and "Habeas Corpus" that have been delivered by Stanton who guided a wagon labeled "War Democracy" driven by four horses each w/the head of a Union General. Seward is depicted at top right as a curly tailed demon holding a knife and eyeing Lincoln. Light brown foxing throughout and a moisture mark affecting the top third of the print. Three vertical margin tears each less than 1" along bottom edge repaired on reverse w/fabric tape. Otherwise moderate handling and tiny corner losses. VG. Rare. Image and text are complete and of the few examples of this print we have encountered all displayed similar or more pronounced wear.
