Item Description
28-1/8x42.75" poster features striking anti-German imagery, showing bloody hand print at top center w/"The Hun - His Mark - Blot It Out With Liberty Bonds" text. Printed in 1917 by Brett Litho Co. of New York. Art by James Allen St. John, who provided art for both movie posters and pulp magazines, often working w/Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs. This poster was the first to refer to the Germans as "Huns," intended to place emphasis on their barbarism. Fueling the fire of an already growing anti-German sentiment, this and other posters like it were part of a carefully crafted war propaganda program. Larger of two sizes (see following item #835), this poster is the scarcer of the two. Poster has been linen-mounted, repairing 4" V-shaped tear at center and tears to top margin, the largest measuring 5". 4.5" Y-shaped tear at lower left w/a few small scattered tears. Upper margin has 1.25" spot of moisture rippling. Bottom corners have had restoration. Poster is evenly aged w/some age spots along upper right, but still displays Fine overall.
