Item Description
We offered a 98% Mint example of this ring in our March 2018 auction, which sold for $12,850. Here is a nearly as nice example, fresh to the market from the original owner. The red accent paint on the top of this ring frequently is found worn away. This example features 100% intact red bkg. around "Supermen Of America - Action Comics" text. However, all red paint is missing from the bkg.  of the "S" chest emblem. Just a few traces of red remain around the outside of the triangular line enclosing the "S" symbol. The silver luster on the exterior surfaces remains intact, w/just very slight loss to from interior of the lower narrow bands from rubbing against finger. Metal bands forming the ring are just slightly less than a perfect circle, which is typical for a ring sized to fit the owner's finger. We know of over 20 examples of the "Member" ring used for a 1940 "Action Comics" sponsored contest open only to members of the "Supermen Of America Club," who submitted a letter on "What I Would Do If I Had The Powers Of Superman." That ring has the full text "Supermen Of America Member." We know of only nine examples of this ring, inscribed "Supermen Of America - Action Comics." There are two additional differences between this "Action Comics" ring and the "Member" ring. Instead of showing a planet and lightning bolts the left and right side panels as seen on the "Member" ring, this version features a pair of V-shaped geometric designs. Additionally, the "Member" ring does not identify the maker. The "Action Comics" ring does, w/"Made In USA" stamped inscription on the lower inner band along w/the letter U w/an arrow design crossing it, the trademark of noted ring maker Uncas. We believe this to be a crucial clue to the purpose of this ring, as the words "Made In U.S.A." were required on items - include premiums - that were to be distributed in Canada. An Exc. example and among the top three or four examples known.
