Item Description
Professionally framed to 16x17.5" w/13x14.5" opening. Published in 1860 this litho references a campaign trip Douglas made under the guise of visiting his elderly mother. When it took the Senator nearly a month to travel from Washington to New York his ploy was foiled. Columbia whips Douglas w/a birch branch as figure at left, Uncle Sam, encourages her in part saying "Him The Stripes Till He Sees Stars" and Douglass pleads "Oh! Marm Let Me Off This Time And I'll Never Do So Any More." Neatly applied .25x.75" paper at bottom center w/text "Douglas." Pencil notation at top right and scattered light brown toning at top center and along right side. Fine. Rare.
