Item Description
27x41" for the original release of the 1935 ComiColor cartoon directed and animated by legendary animator Ub Iwerks. Based on the controversial children's book of the same name, poster features comical stone lithography scene showing stereotypical depiction of Sambo climbing up coconut tree and throwing coconuts at "tiger" pursuing him; in reality the "tiger" is Sambo's dog, who has painted stripes on himself and has a bear trap in his mouth to resemble the tiger's sharp teeth. A monkey in the tree above Sambo reaches for him, just before the monkey throws Sambo from the tree. Originally folded, poster has been linen-mounted w/scattered restoration along fold lines and at fold crease intersections. 10" area of creasing at lower right (extending from margin up and across "Sambo" name in title) has had some restoration. Vertical 2.25" color touch-up to blue letter L in "ComicColor" name at top and scattered color touch-ups to handling creases at top in tree leaves area at top of poster, which also has .25" area and .5x.75" triangular-shaped section replaced; this restoration blends well. Margins have been repainted w/some minor scattered edge filling along left margin. As professionally linen-mounted and restored, poster now displays Exc. w/vivid color. Very rare original release poster for this controversial cartoon.
