Item Description
Each is in 16x20" mat w/9.5x14.25" opening. First features William Marcy Tweed better known as "Boss Tweed: depicted as a vulture at the center of this cartoon published Sept. 23, 1871. Tweed is flanked by fellow corrupt politicians w/a corpse labeled "New York" at their feet. This was Nast's first depiction of Tweed and caused such a stir that Tweed attempted to bribe Nast to leave town. He declined and vowed to keeping drawing Tweed. Second was published Nov. 20, 1875 and features a large trumpeting elephant standing atop rubble including, vultures, rats and a sign "Reformed Tammany Hall." Nast was responsible for popularizing the use of the elephant as the symbol of the Republican party. Both prints are original two-sided publications culled from editions of Harper's Weekly. Each is professionally matted under acetate secured w/a small piece of archival tape on r/l edges. Light handling and extremely clean. VF.
