13.75x22.5" card stock window card. The event selected Cheryl Ann Bailey to represent Massachusetts at the national pageant held later in the summer during a star studded Madison Square Garden event that featured the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder and theme song by Curtis Mayfield. The image used here features the 1968 runner ups Linda Johnson, left, and Theresa Claytor, right, w/Saundra Williams, center, who was crowned the first Miss Black America during the inaugural competition in 1968. Heavy edge wear most notably along the top and bottom edges. Foxing, moderate age toning and handling wear. VG. Scarce. Until 1940 the Miss America pageant rules forbid women of color from participating. J. Morris Anderson's desire to give his daughters the opportunity to be "Miss America" despite the color of their skin spurred him to create the Miss Black America pageant juxtaposing it on the same night as the Miss America pageant in 1968 and only a few blocks away in Atlantic City. The event blossomed into a major televised event the following year and in 1971 Oprah Winfrey represented her home state of Tennessee.
