Item Description
3", no maker's name, with paper label under celluloid against gold background. Text reads "Souvenir" with photo below of "Capt. Konig" and below that his merchant submarine "Deutschland" plus "1916" date. Design includes an angel holding a laurel wreath above Konig's head implying heroic status. He made two patrols to the United States in 1916 arriving in Baltimore July 10. 1916 with a cargo of dyestuffs. He was grandly welcomed by the mayor and city officials. His second voyage that year took him to New London, CT but this piece is from a Baltimore collection and almost certainly from that city. After its use as a blockade-breaking merchant sub, The Deutschland, formerly operated by the North GermanLloyd line, was taken over by the German Imperial navy and converted into U-155 armed with torpedo tubes and deck guns to commence on a successful raiding career in 1917-18 sinking 120,434 tons of Allied forces shipping. Small black paint loss from the underside collet. Exc. An historic rarity. One known to us.
