Item Description
In 1940, DC Comics ran a Superman contest promoted in Superman and Action Comics with 1600 of these rings used as prizes. The ring may also have been used as a give-away with the candy and gum promotions as well. Total known in the hobby is approximately two dozen examples making it one of the rarest and most sought after Superman items. The ring base is adjustable silvered brass with a pair of lightning bolts on one side and a planet design on other. The ring base silvering is nearly 100% complete and the luster is bright. The ring top has a brass disk with image of Superman breaking a chain. Surrounding text reads "Supermen Of America/Member" (there is also a version of this ring in which "Action Comics" replaces the "Member" text). The background of the inscription is red paint and this color is the first thing to wear off of these rings. Without magnification, the 90% paint present on this example appears very close to 100% complete. Some luster wear to the raised Superman image. Overall Exc. and among the best condition examples extant. Ex-Toscanini collection.
