Item Description
39.5x43". Listed in Collins, Threads Of History as plate #249 and Hake as MF-3004. Silk background w/blue border and red fringe. Front features Currier lithographs of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson w/hand painted text below "Put None But Americans On Guard." Reverse has text "Fillmore And Donelson For Peace, Harmony, And The Union." Scattered fabric pulls and small losses most notably at bottom l/r corners. Lithos have tape stains at edges and one affecting Jefferson's portrait. This tape was applied long ago when some of the delicate fringe came undone. VG. With the Whig party broken up after the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska act its most liberal members sought refuge in the newly formed Republican Party and candidate John C. Fremont while the most conservative members fled to Fillmore and the 'Know Nothing' Party. Formally known as the American Party, they were the first major American third party. Standing for a strong Union they focused on the issue of immigration and largely ignored slavery. This unique banner is an amazing survivor of the contentious era leading up to the Civil War. A rare opportunity to obtain a museum quality Presidential campaign parade banner. An icon of our hobby documented by both Collins and Hake.
