Item Description
1.25x4". C. 1863. Image of a drawing depicting Butler w/large cutlass sword and pulling a woman by her hair as figure "John Bull" in window at top right shouts in horror. Butler served as military governor of New Orleans from May-Dec. of 1862 gaining the nickname "Bluebeard" on account of his edict that any women caught insulting a Union soldier would be arrested as a prostitute. Light even age toning and minor corner rounding. VF. A nice specimen of this graphic and historic card.
