Item Description
Copper luster heavy metal ashtray with a silvered metal base plate which has the logo of the appliance maker "Sunbeam" along with a "Design Pat." 87474 and name "Chicago Flexible Shaft Co." Ashtray overall is 4x4x4" tall with text on the flat area surrounding the recessed oval ash receiver reading "Chicago Fire 1871/A Century Of Progress Chicago 1933". Depicted in foreground, sitting on a stool, is Mrs. O'Leary with a milk bucket beneath her cow. In background is what appears to be a wooden board shed and fence. Top of the shed reads "Matches". Matches are gone but a wooden matchbox is enclosed vertically with an opening slot on the right side so a match can be lighted using the striker on the side of the matchbox. When the "Matches" metal lid is closed an internal mechanism causes the cow's right hind leg to quickly fly upward striking a plastic and metal lantern suspended on a rod at left and thus re-enacting the suspected cause of the disaster that left 300 dead, 17,500 destroyed buildings and 100,000 homeless. Light wear to the copper luster, mostly within the ash receiver. VF and rare. Ex-Ed Potter and Ted Hake Collections. Comes with Hake's COA.
