Item Description
3x3.5" blank back. Additional slogans at top "Union Of The Whigs, For The Sake Of The Union" and "The People, To Preserve Their Liberties Must Do Their Own Voting And Their Own Fighting." Issued for the 1840 Kentucky gubernatorial election featuring Letcher for Governor. In 1828, while a member of the US House, Letcher served as middle man in talks between Henry Clay and John Adams that saw Clay's House faction support Adams in the contested Presidential election in exchange for Clay becoming Secretary of State. Jackson supporters later termed this the "Corrupt Bargain." Light brown damp staining, horizontal crease at center and edge/handling wear. VG. Rare. One of the only artifacts naming Letcher we can recall encountering in 53 years.
