Item Description
18.25x25.5" linen backed to 20x27". Advertising a debate in "Trumansburg" on "October 31st, 1860" between "Hon. Alex S. Diven Of Elmira The Republican Candidate For Congress" and "Col. Harvey A. Dowe Of Ithaca The Democratic Candidate For Congress." Additional text of note at bottom left "Fellow Citizens, Come 'Let Us Reason Together'". Restoration to seal separations, minor touch ups throughout. VG. Diven was staunchly against slavery and was elected to the western NY seat. He was the first congressman to introduce a bill allowing for the recruitment of African American troops. He served in the Civil War as Colonel of the 107th New York Infantry. A rare artifact from a critical election cycle in American history.
