19.25x27.75" linen mounted. Hand colored print has "Copyright 1884 By J. Edward Ireland" at lower left and "Advance Publishing Co. New York, NY" credit at lower right. Print shows portraits of eight members of the 1876 Electoral Commission that awarded the contested Presidential election to Hayes; "J. A. Garfield, J. P. Bradley, O. P. Morton, W. Strong, G.F. Edmunds, S.F. Miller, F. T. Frelinghuysen, & G.F. Hoar" and the four Republican members of the Louisiana Returning Board "S.M. Kenner, G. Casenave, T.C. Anderson & J. Madison Well" tasked w/canvassing state ballots of the 1876 election who awarded the states electoral votes to Hayes. Rifles bundled as fasces flank central design. Chart at left "Crimes Rewarded And The Civil Service Degraded" tallies salary of those accused of being rewarded by Hayes. Right heading "Appealing For Justice To The Commission In 1877" collects statements in support of Tilden speaking before the Electoral Commission. One each vertical and horizontal crease, sealed edge tear at top left and moderate handling wear. Fine. Stamp in lower left margin "Library Of Congress Copyright May 19, 1884 City Of Washington" w/handwritten number in pencil. An outstanding poster providing a fascinating window into the thinking of the era and demonstrating the ripple effect of the contested election. The first we've offered in our 53 years.
