Item Description
5.5x8.5" on thin coarse stock. 1960. Blank back flyer w/text giving background on the sit-in movement. Intended to be handed out by picketers w/text including "You Can Make Woolworth Serve/ This And Every Other Woolworth Store Is Directly Controlled By The National Chain. Every Dime And Dollar Spent Here Is An Open Endorsement Of The Chain's Policy Of Racial Segregation And Discrimination. Don't Back Southern Segregation With Your Money." Vertical and horizontal fold and moderate age toning. VF. The only example we've seen in 53 years. The Sit-In movement began Feb 1, 1960 in Greensboro, NC when students began utilizing nonviolent direct action by taking seats at "Whites Only" lunch counters at Woolworth's department store. It spread across the nation and spanned lunch counters, swimming pools, beaches and more. An important & rare artifact from a critical event in the civil right movement.
