Item Description
This 12" tall (29.5" long overall) hand-carved/hand-painted wooden folk art anti-Hitler effigy head is of great historic interest. Carved from a solid block of wood and realistically painted, complete w/bloodied black eye, these heads were mounted on poles as shown in the included original candid photograph and used in protest gatherings in England and elsewhere to highlight Germany's persecution/treatment of Jews. Several were held in London's Hyde Park. Head shows moderate scattered wear and aging/dust soiling w/some paint flakes and scuffs. Hair and chin have some shallow surface flakes and head has some scattered hairlines. Points of mustache have some small chips. Wooden handle has split just below where it is attached to head. VG/Fine overall. Rare 2-3/8x3-3/8" original photograph captures a moment during one of these protests w/similar anti-Hitler effigy held high as other participants raise their fists in solidarity. Matte finish photo has deckled edge and is dated "2/5/43" in pencil on reverse. Evenly aged w/corner tip crease at upper right. Fine/VF.
