Item numbers 1 though 954 and 3000 through 3054 in auction 190.
Item Description
12.5x18.75" with slightly trimmed margins. Reverse center vertical has 4 small archival tape repairs and two small touch-ups at staple holes. Front displays clean and extremely Fine. Cartoon by Grant Hamilton portrays Debs as a convict, a reference to his being jailed six months in Woodstock, Illinois following the Pullman strike. His helmet plumes read "Riot/Anarchy" and he is shown with cartoon's title "The New Leader Of Democracy." Left side shows tombstone of "Bryan" with raven perched atop holding sign "Never More." In early 1897, Debs proclaimed his belief in Socialism and this is a graphic example of the Republican Party's efforts to demean his goal of improving the working man's economic status.
