Item Description
17x28" frame w/13x24" glazed cotton flag. Text "Big 6" w/initials of six people at right and "The Night In Balto. Hon. Wm. J. Bryan. Speech At 5 Rg. Sept. 14, 1908" hand written on stripes. Canton has 48 stars arranged in six staggered rows of eight. Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th state in 1908 and while New Mexico and Arizona would not be officially admitted until 1912, flag manufacturers had been making anticipatory flags in this pattern for some years. Scattered losses contained entirely to small areas of the ink inscription most notably affecting the "pe" in "Speech" that are only visible on close inspection. Otherwise only light age toning and handling wear. Fine. A unique artifact from the populists Democrats final campaign for the presidency.
