Item Description
38x40" on masonite by "Edgerton & Co." These enormous signs hung on lamp posts in Elwood on Aug. 17, 1940 the day the Republican National Committee formally notified Willkie of his nomination. The small Indiana town saw an unprecedented influx of people as an estimated 150,000 traveled to the event, at the time the largest political rally in American history. Heavy paint wear at top and bottom center w/majority of portrait intact. Small edge losses and heavy handling wear. Good. Only three examples known to us. A fire in the building where these were housed accounts for their extreme rarity. Dan Makara Collection.
