Item Description
This premium was briefly issued in late 1939/early 1940 in "Action Comics" and "Superman" comic books and was obtained by recruiting three friends to join the Supermen of America Club. Large 5.5" dia. emblem/patch is one of the very earliest Superman premiums and was originally advertised as a "Superman Emblem." Unlike other similar patches which are just felt, this is made of two thin layers of felt and sandwiched between these layers is a thin sheet of cardboard, which gives the patch a high degree of stiffness although it flexes under pressure. Front has choice silk-screened design featuring classic image of Superman breaking chains surrounded by "Supermen Of America - Action Comics" text. This is rare variety w/fleshtone coloring on face/hands and yellow bordering "S" chest symbol. Scattered gray age spotting w/some darkening to yellow border. Age spotting is most notable to white bkg. behind Superman image. Some small pinpoint flakes to yellow at 1 and 3 o'clock areas. A thin coating has been applied to back. VG overall. There are far fewer emblems than copies of "Action Comics" #1, w/only about a dozen known examples. One of the rarest and most desirable Superman premiums. Dan Makara Collection.
