Item Description
Big 2-3/16" button, no maker, has concave metal back with fixed horizontal bar pin. A 7.25" long ribbon is held under the metal back. Ribbon has a few very minor crease lines. It depicts "Jack Dempsey/Champion" and "Tommy Gibbons/Challenger". Also shown are "Loy J. Molumby/Legion Commander of Montana" and "Mike Collins/Who Made the Match". The fight took place in Shelby, MT on July 4, 1923. Shelby hit oil in 1922 and local leaders thought a big fight would secure their fame. Dempsey agreed in return for a big purse. In the end under 8,000 turned out to see Dempsey take a 15-round decision. Both the ribbon and button are Exc. First we've offered. Rare. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example.
