Item Description
1.25" with Brunt, San Francisco back paper and produced in an 18-day period between when the fight was prohibited in San Francisco and relocated to Reno, Nevada. The comet theme was inspired by The Great Daylight Comet witnessed in Jan. and Haley's Comet whose close pass in May caused a media sensation. Promoter Tex Rickard planned for a San Francisco heavyweight fight, with obvious racial overtones, but anti-boxing sentiment swayed the Governor who withdrew support leaving Rickard between June 15, 1910 and fight day July 4, 1910 to totally switch venues and publicity. On this button, the gloved hairy arm labeled "Jeff" launches a caricatured head of Jack Johnson into the solar system  as a comet with caption below the cartoon "Visible July 4, 1910/Reno, Nev. " Thin surface oxidation on the collet, dark dots on the celluloid around the collet, and light stain on front mainly the outer edge to depth of 1/8",  but with cello retaining full gloss. Rare. VG. One known to us. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example.
