Item Description
3" without maker and with bluish/gray cardboard back which has couple surface ripples and three very tiny dents where the button's curled edge wraps around the cardboard. The front cello has tiny wear in reflected light but is Exc. displaying Mint. The first time the illustrated boy who became MAD magazine's mascot appeared on a button was in 1900 (see Button Power, page 22). He made his first appearance on a MAD publication in 1954, in 1956 artist Norman Mingo painted his defining portrait and editor Al Feldstein named the "What, Me Worry? boy Alfred E. Neuman. Four years later, this made him the perfect candidate, in a long Philadelphia area high school tradition, to appear on the "Class Of '60'" button from the all boys Roman Catholic high school in South Philadelphia. Complete with beret and goatee, he declares on his button "Man I'm Beat". A very limited number would have been produced and this is the only example we've seen in our 54 years. Not even shown in "Collectibly Mad" by Grant Geissman.
