Item Description
12x18-1/8" pressbook w/16 pages for the original release of the 12-chapter Republic serial starring Tom Tyler in the title role of Captain Marvel and Frank Coghlan, Jr. as his alter ego, Billy Batson. This serial was adapted from the popular Captain Marvel comic book character then appearing in Fawcett Publications' Whiz Comics and Captain Marvel Adventures. Cover features wonderful action scene with Captain Marvel facing off against fighter planes (altered from cover of Whiz Comics #14). This is the more deluxe of two pressbooks published for this serial, the other had only 12 pages and did not feature any color or the tipped-in full color 7x10" premium picture of Captain Marvel w/pricing information on reverse. Typical pressbook content throughout, including images of Fawcett comics Captain Marvel appeared in, novelty Captain Marvel Power Siren whistle, blotter, theater/lobby displays, newspaper ad mats and an assortment of lobby cards and movie serial posters, including a 3x10' banner and three-sheet and six-sheet posters. Cover has split and is loose from pages. Covers show obvious wear w/some moisture staining and pages have some scattered soiling. Pressbook is sold as-is. Historicly important piece of ephemera from the first live action superhero film adaptation. Comes w/12x18" pressbook w/six fold-out pages for 1953 re-release in which serial has been re-titled "Return Of Captain Marvel." Pressbook features much of the same content, only in bw and w/o premiums or comic books shown. Some scattered handling wear. VF.
