Item Description
Large and impressive 35-5/8x46.75" poster (the larger of two different sizes produced) in 1942. Poster is dominated by photo image of girl and boy holding hands and wearing gas masks on their way to school w/"Dear God, Keep Them Safe!" text at upper left and "Buy War Bonds And Stamps" at upper right. Bottom left has small "War Bond Poster No. 1 - The Kroger Grocery & Baking Company, Cincinnati, Ohio - Litho USA" text. As indicated by this text, poster was privately printed by the Kroger chain to express their patriotism and involvement with the war effort. These private promotions were printed in much smaller numbers than the posters issued by the US Government, making surviving examples extremely rare. Poster was never folded and has since been linen-mounted w/moderate color touch-ups along top margin and scattered touch-ups along bottom margin. Lower right corner has had missing 1x2" piece filled in. Overall fade to red portions of poster. Main image area of poster has not been touched. Fine overall but retains strong visual appeal. Very rare.
