Item Description
4.25x8" thin paper. A response to the controversial results of the 1876 election, this handbill touts of a "Patriots Rally! - Monday, Mar. 5th, at 7 P.M. To Celebrate Their Great Victory (Over The Ballot Box)." Gov. J Madison Wells of Louisiana controlled his state's electoral ballots which he gave to Hayes and Wheeler which decided the election. He was therefore to be given "100 Guns" salute and the program was "To Conclude With One Gun And Bonfire For Hayes & Wheeler." Followed by a list of six reasons for the Hayes victory. Final reason - "Because 8 Is One More Than 7", a reference to the final count of electoral ballots. Also of note "Hail To The Chief - Justice Bradley" is a satirical reference to the Justice who was involved in what some consider the scandals of the Electoral College and the election. Back has what appears to be a combination of scrap book residue and white material of unknown origins not affecting the front appearance. Scattered wear most notably a tiny hole just above "Bradley" and edge chipping. Fine. Print remains bold. An interesting & rare item from this controversial election.
