Item Description
1.5" sepia and a real photo rarity that includes back paper of St. Louis Button Co. The cello surface has extensive crazing cracks but they are hairlines and in some light angles not seen. Also, the lines are very flat, just slightly felt. The text as quoted in the title applies to Oklahoma- born Native American who played college ball for the Haskell Indians. His All- American year as Fullback was 1923 and it is said Jim Thorpe called him the greatest athlete Thorpe had ever seen. Levi, known as "Skee", later went on to coach at his alma mater. Only example known to us. Earliest button we know of to show an All-American and earliest to show Native American player who is wearing Native American blanket and headdress. Bottom of photo has tiny photographer's name "Moore" plus a letter C which might be an attempt at copyright marking. No stain, full gloss, but with crazing VG. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
