Item Description
11.75x19". War Democrats worked against the Copperheads who favored immediate peace w/the Confederacy. This broadside denounces the 1864 Democratic Chicago Platform, which called for Peace w/the Southern Confederacy, notably stating "The Men Composing This Demented Cabal Have Merely Personated Themselves And A Few Misguided Followers" and calling for a "Mass Convention At Cincinnati On The 28th Day Of September 1864." Additional text of note "We Have Now 'An Aristocratic Rebellion Against A Democratic Government.' It Will Be Well That The Rebellion Should Be Put Down In The Name Of Democracy, That Mankind May Learn The Power Of The Democratic Masses When Dealing With Conspirators Against Popular Rights." Creases and separations reinforced w/older clear tape on reverse, tape stains, and edge wear. Just Good. Rare. Though McClellan was a War Democrat most denounced him instead supporting Lincoln & Johnson who had ran under the banner of National Union Party to attract further support from War Dems especially in border states. The only example of this broadside we can recall offering in our 54 years.
