Item Description
27.5x52". "Clay Frelinghuysen. Markle & Protective Tariff" strong blue text appears on stripes. 15.5x17" canton features 11" dia. portrait of Henry Clay surrounded by oak leaf wreath. Counter text across portrait in capital letters reads "Taylor", in reverse. Flag was originally issued in 1844 and was re-used again in 1848. Small loss at top right corner affecting top red stripe. Scattered and trivial tiny holes and spots of age toning. Five small piece of adhesive along top edge secure the flag to acid free matte board along w/a tiny stitched area at top left corner and another in the canton. Fine. As a Clay flag alone this would be an impressive rarity. Given the adornment of the successive 1848 Whig candidate, Zachary Taylor, this flag is especially enticing. Taylor flags are essentially non-existent. Collins listed no example of flags for Taylor or his Democratic opponent, Lewis Cass, in his book Threads of History and we have encountered only a single printed Taylor flag in our 54 years.
