Item Description
This 4.5" tall badge graces the cover front and center of Dr. Paul Muchinsky's authoritative 2008 book Boxing Pinback Buttons. The brass hanger holds celluloid w/text quoted in our title. The reverse has a bar pin, a small incised shield reading "Workers Union of N.A", and a bar that once suspended a ribbon. As this is the only example known to Muchinsky and us, we don't know what text was on the ribbon, but likely  this was produced just before his famous heavyweight fight which he lost to Bob Fitzsimmons on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1897 at The Race Track Arena, Carson City, Nevada (see following four lots). The reverse of the suspended brass shield hanger has a brass plate which once had eight small tabs with six still intact and properly sealing the piece. On the left and right back edges are two old small pieces of clear cellophane tape placed there long ago for no apparent reason and showing only very slightly against the brass luster. The front has celluloid cover over superb color outdoor scene of Corbett in fighting stance. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example.
