Item Description
8.5x11" on thin paper. Graphic sketch of marchers at center w/additional text of note "The Poor People Of America, Demand/Decent Jobs And Income!/The Right To A Decent Life!" w/SCLC 1401 U Street Washington DC address at bottom. Three horizontal and one vertical fold w/age toning along fold lines and a hole in the field at top center. Moderate edge and handling wear. VG. The first example of this flyer we've encountered. Text "Spring 1968" above graphic indicated this was likely produced early in the campaign. By May of 1967, SCLC made the decision to elevate pressure on Congress to pass the Economic Bill of Rights. King advisor Stanley Levison derived the Poor People's Campaign from the 1932 Bonus Army occupation of Washington DC. Occurring May 12 till June 24 it was carried out by new SCLC President Ralph Abernathy in the wake of King's assassination in April.
