Item Description
17x22.75" mounted to 18x24" board. Distributed by "The Nelson Mandela New York Anti-Apartheid Welcome Committee" for an event "Thursday June 21, 1990" at "Africa Square/ Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building." Edge wrinkling and moderate handling. Fine. Mandela had only been released from prison a little more than four months before this event after spending 27 years in prison. While negotiating w/the South African government, Mandela made a fundraising trip to the US for African National Congress (ANC) political party. He was met by an estimated 750,000 people upon arrival in New York during a ticker tape parade through Lower Manhattan on June 20. The following day he delivered speeches at Yankee Stadium, visited the United Nations, participated in a townhall at City College w/Ted Koppel and spoke to a crowd of 100,000 gathered in Harlem for the event advertised on this poster.
