Battling Bill the Bartender's real name was Wilhelm Schenck and his career starting in 1913 led to heavyweight bouts (three in 1917-18) with Battling Levinsky and two with Dempsey, the first a non-title loss in Milwaukee 1918 and then a Dec. 1920 title loss to Dempsey in The Garden w/Grantland Rice writing Dempsey's ear looked like a "cross between a veal cutlet and a bloody sponge".
