Item Description
First is 3.5" with rarely seen company curl text naming "James Spencer & Co. 22 N. 6th St. Phila. Pa." Also, Muchinsky in his book notes for this item 129, three ways this is an unusual boxing button. First, it was the largest boxing button to date (becoming a standard size in the 1970s), second, the yellow background is major departure from the consistent b/w colors of the past and third it is the only known fight-specific pin-back for Joe Louis. Metal back has very minor circular scratching in the silver luster. Cello has pin-point nick to left of "To" and very slightest few spots of faint age on background at upper right. Full gloss. One known to us. Rare. Button for Louis's opponent Lou Nova has the title "Pugilist" on this button and the only boxing button known to Muchinsky (and us) to carry that word. Exc.
